It’s rained heavily all day here, and whilst we don’t mind being outside whatever the weather, today we cosied up indoors. We finished jarring the shallots in white wine vinegar, sugar and spices – and started our first attempt at cultivating mushrooms.
Our mushroom kit arrived as a propagator with compost laced with mycelium, and a little bag of soil. After keeping the compost in a warm room for a week, it turns white with spiderweb-like threads of fungus.
Today we covered the compost with the top layer of soil, having pierced the bag and soaked it in water first, and are now eagerly awaiting our first crop of button mushrooms in around a week’s time. The kit promises three separate crops … we’ll let you know how it goes.
I need to follow so that I find out about the mushrooms. Good luck.

Thank you! 🙂 The children keep checking on them but I think we have 6-7 more days to go yet …
